Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the information you may need could be found following the links on the bottom of the page. But here are some of the basic questions one may think of asking

Q: Climate
A: Chicago is generally very cold during the winter months; be prepared for weather at or below 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  Snow can be deep, 12" or more in a day or just a dusting.  Practical is better than beauty in the winter here.

Q: When is the deadline for application
A: December 1 for Fellowship consideration and at least 30 days prior to start of residency without a Fellowship.

Q: Who should apply
A: Artists in all disciplines who are interested in spending a creative week in Chicago, sharing space with other artists.  Academics or writers of any discipline, who wish to have a 6 day period of work with breakfast and light lunch provided.

Q: Rules of the house.

A: Quiet time is observed for writers during the daytime and late at night.  No loud music is allowed.

Q: If I cannot afford the full price of a residency. Can I apply for a Fellowship.
A: Yes, writing samples are required. Go to Application page to download necessary forms.

Q: Is the evening meal included?
A: No, there are many great restaurants nearby, or you may choose to make meals with other residents in the kitchen.  Even better, there are numerous delivery menus to choose from if you wish to stay in and work through the evenings.
